When is it time to get professional help for emotional issues related to depression, anxiety or both? Do you tell yourself that everyone has periods when they are down or that it’s normal to worry or feel stressed when trying to cope in today’s world?
When individuals regularly feel unhappy, although by objective standards they are leading fulfilling, successful lives, therapy should be considered. If persistent anxiety prevents one’s ability to get a restful night’s sleep, manifests itself in physiological symptoms, or deters someone from engaging in routine tasks or desired recreational activities, therapy is advisable.
Once a patient understands the nature of the issues driving particularly distressing symptoms, those symptoms can be controlled or even eliminated. There is often no need to resort to prolonged, ongoing therapy or medication. However, patients who feel that they have developed the insight and means to cope with life’s challenges after a short course of therapy, can still feel free to call for an appointment whenever they need support in dealing with any troubling situations that may arise.
