Take a look around and learn all there is to know about my practice
We live in a complex world with many challenges. As a psychologist and educator, I have been privileged to help patients address matters related to emotional issues such as depression and anxiety, learning problems, and relationship concerns. My past experience has included being an educator and adviser to adults and children at all academic levels as well as a clinical psychologist providing psychotherapy and coaching to individuals, couples and families in diverse settings. In addition to working individually with children who have learning challenges such as those related to disabilities or ADHD, I assist parents and teachers in developing behavioral management strategies that can be of assistance to the child. Often these techniques can help avoid extended therapy or medication for a child.
Being human isn’t easy. It is often difficult to weather the difficulties inherent in everyday living or dealing with the struggles relative to a particular life crisis that challenges the resolve of even the most resilient individuals. Nevertheless, making the first call to a therapist to set up an appointment is often extremely difficult. It is not unusual for people who are experiencing emotional problems of various types to delay seeking professional help. They often opt for speaking to relatives, friends, or acquaintances about personal issues.
However, speaking to a professional is preferable. Unfortunately, although they may be well-meaning, relatives and friends may be biased, may not keep your issues confidential, and may have not have professional expertise to deal with issues related to modern living. As a licensed clinical psychologist, I am dedicated to helping people develop the insight and tools that will foster significant strides toward well-being. We live busy lives today. I want to guide my patients so they can be experts in understanding their own mental health needs and then send them on their way to enjoy life. My goal when working with patients is to help them develop the insight and tools that will enable them to promote their own mental health.

Since it is evident that one type of treatment may not be most effective for all emotional issues, I consider a method or combination of methods that are likely to be best for a particular problem or best suited to the particular patient. When appropriate, however, my approach is mainly cognitive-behavioral. I am partial to cognitive-behavioral therapy because of the demonstrated efficacy of this type of treatment to reduce symptoms and improve functioning. For example, a significant number of studies involving children concluded that for mood and anxiety disorders, the cognitive-behavioral approach was as beneficial as pharmacological approaches. Why have your children take medication if drugs can be avoided? However, sometimes a variety of other interventions will be necessary if the patient wishes to address emotional challenges in an effective way that will bring about significant change without medication. These methods can include interventions such as nutritional supplementation, relaxation training, and behavioral modification. A patient or a parent who opts for such methods, needs to make a commitment to giving time and dedication to such a process. If someone knows in all honesty that such a commitment is not realistic for them, then another approach may be necessary. I am open to providing referrals to recognized, experienced professionals who can be contacted for a psychiatric evaluation and medication management. I often work closely with such knowledgeable physicians to provide the patient with the comprehensive care that will provide the best chance for successful treatment.
